Shellac is used both for isolating porous surfaces before applying sizing and for polishing and fine protection of finished gold leaf.
Compared to regular shellac, dewaxed shellac provides a more transparent and virtually colorless result after application and drying.
Composition
Natural, organic resin in irregular orange-brown flakes.
Method of use
Soak the shellac flakes in at least a 95% ethanol solution. After 24 hours, the shellac will be fully absorbed. Filter the mixture to remove any deposits and impurities that may have formed. The shellac will be ready for use. The resulting solution of shellac and alcohol can be stored for several months in a tightly closed container. Filtering is recommended before each new use.
Yield
Approximately 250 g of shellac per liter of alcohol.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place in a separate container, closed and away from direct light and heat. The ideal temperature is 15-20°C with humidity below 50%. The product is not sensitive to cold, but can be damaged by heat.
Additional information
The dilution percentage, method of application, and amounts applied can significantly affect the working time. The most suitable application methods should be determined experimentally based on the substrate used and the desired result.
