Gum arabic is a traditionally used plant additive for watercolor painting. It serves as a binder or medium for the paints and enhances the transparency of their colors.
The "Winsor & Newton" gum arabic has a pale yellowish tint. It dries slowly, increasing the working time and spreading of colors in techniques such as "wet on wet." It is used as a base on which water-soluble paints are applied, enhancing their depth, gloss, and transparency.
